The general rule of thumb is that Hysys is better for oil and gas and AspenPlus is better for specialty chemicals, but a lot of it comes down to what is available at your school/company and what you are used to using. If I remember right it’s difficult or impossible to run a file from one on the other (I could be wrong, it’s been a while since I’ve messed with it). This isn’t something I would personally mess around with trying to get a free copy from somewhere; it’s not like trying to download a song or movie. As mentioned above, they are pretty secure, and AspenTech values their software very highly.
